The result was a bolder-looking LinkedIn logo that featured a larger, more modern, and playful design. In 2011, LinkedIn brought in the New York-based design firm, Pentagram, to redesign its logo. From 2006 to 2011, LinkedIn used several versions of its wordmark logo. This design was later replaced in 2005 with a new logo that had a stylized version of the company name in blue with black shading. It featured a simple capital “IN” in blue, with the full company name, “Linkedin”, written in lowercase letters below it. The “Deal Now” button allows interior designers and architects to order components in their design with brands directly in SketchUp. Managing a shopping list manually is completely boring for me. “It’s been 21 years that I’ve been an architect and 21 years that I’ve hated administrative work. The extension provides the price of each component specified in the proposal, so professionals can provide cost estimates to their clients. The shopping list within Up for SketchUp includes the running total price of each component, making project management easy. After installing the plugin, professionals can filter 3D components by brand, product, color, dimension, and price. This SketchUp plugin provides professionals with a library of quality products. To meet this need, Frédéric and Jean-Yves Saintot (an entrepreneur and brand specialist) launched a new business called OXP, which developed UP for SketchUp. With the catalog of Maisons du Monde’s products on 3D Warehouse, Maureen, BtoB Director at Maisons du Monde, and Frédéric noticed a gap in SketchUp workflows – how could his clients ensure that the products they were finding on 3D Warehouse were reliable, quality products? After all, anyone can model and contribute to the components library, but professional interior designers and architects need quality to show their clients during conceptual design. In 2014 he started working with Maisons du Monde, and at the time, the furniture components available in 3D Warehouse didn't showcase the latest, high-quality designs available from Maisons du Monde. The person who drove Maisons du Monde’s transition into SketchUp’s model warehouse was tech-savvy interior designer Frédéric Tabary. With their unique business services, the question turned to how to get their interior design ideas in front of clients and turn sketched-out ideas into reality. They develop one catalog per year dedicated to quality B2B products, meaning these furnishings must have specific professional standards: they must be fireproof, durable, and functional. The business division of Maisons du Monde caters to professionals with larger, more complex interior design and architectural projects (designing and renovating hotels, bars, restaurants, offices, etc). This is because sentences use both present and past tense verbs. The active voice helps to create a stronger connection to the action/scene for the reader. Through the use of the active voice, the scene becomes more vivid than if the writer used the passive voice. Here is a handy chart summarising the key differences between the active and passive voice: Active VoiceĪlways made with a conjugated form of the verb ' to be'Ĭontains the main verb in its past participle form The main verb in its past participle form, e.g. Whereas the active voice contains an active verb, the passive voice must contain the following Ī conjugated form of the verb 'to be', e.g. There is also a difference between the verbs in the active and passive voice. However, in the passive voice, the subject is placed last and so the sentence becomes less authoritative. In the active voice, the subject takes on the primary position in the sentence and so is active and dominant in how the sentence is constructed. This is because of the placement of the subject in the statements. The active voice is far stronger than the passive voice in these examples. There is a noticeable difference between how these sentences are constructed. Below are three examples of passive voice: This means that instead of actively 'doing' the verb, the subject is instead passive. This is very different to the active voice as here the subject is acted on by the verb. ![]() The opposite of the active voice is the passive voice. Grammatical voice doesn't only include the active voice. ![]() The early bird catches the worm Difference between active voice vs passive voice This is a helpful way to spot the active voice within a text.įig 1. The active voice tends to follow a linguistic pattern that is referred to as subject-verb-object, this is sometimes shortened to SVO. This means that the subject will come first in the sentence, followed by the verb and finally the object. The active voice occurs in sentences where the subject acts. Active verbs are opposite to passive verbs, which are past participles that follow the words was/were. These are verbs in the past, present, or future tense that follow a subject. The mouse (the subject) ate (the verb) the cheese (the object).Īctive voice sentences also contain active verbs. The word order in an active voice sentence looks like this: subject + verb + object. We form the active voice through word order and the use of verbs. For example, in the sentence ' The man ate the burger' the subject (the man) is doing the action (eating). In active voice sentences, the subject is the 'doer' of the verb. The active voice is used to show that the subject of the sentence is active and is performing an action on an object. This explanation is all about the active voice. ![]() Not only that but most books, articles, and research papers use active voice as it will not confuse the readers, and will immediately get to the point.G rammatical voice r efers to the different grammar terms used to understand the relationship between the action done by the verb and the subjects, or objects, it affects. This type of writing is very important as it will directly show who is doing the action as a way to prevent any misreads or obscurification in one’s text. When rewritten in active voice the example sentence will be, “Allison had eaten the ice cream bar during the state fair.”Īctive voice is a tone in writing where the doer of the action is stated before the object, person, or thing receiving the action is stated. Afterward, we will then rewrite the sentence ensuring that Allison will come before the ice cream bar. For example in the sample sentence or statement “The ice cream bar had been eaten by Allison during the state fair.”, we can easily identify the doer of the action as Allison, and the object receiving the action as the ice cream bar. After you have identified the doer and the action the person or thing has done then you will rewrite the sentence to that of an active voice. To rewrite a sentence in the passive voice, you must first identify the doer of the action and its associated action. How do you rewrite a sentence from passive to active voice? ![]() ![]() The secondary minima of diffraction set a limit to the useful magnification of objective lenses in optical microscopy due to inherent diffraction of light by these lenses. Under most circumstances, the angle θ(1) is very small so the approximation that the sin and tan of the angle are almost equal yields: θ(1) ≅ 1.22(λ/d)įrom these equations, it becomes apparent that the central maximum is directly proportional to λ/d, making this maximum more spread out for longer wavelengths and for smaller apertures. Where θ(1) is the angular position of the first order diffraction minima (the first dark ring), λ is the wavelength of the incident light, d is the diameter of the aperture, and 1.22 is a constant. Mathematical analysis of the diffraction patterns produced by a circular aperture is described by the diffraction equation: sinθ(1) = 1.22(λ/d) Circular apertures produce diffraction patterns similar to those described above, except the pattern naturally exhibits a circular symmetry. However, all optical instruments have circular apertures, for example the pupil of an eye or the circular diaphragm and lenses of a microscope. Our discussions of diffraction have used a slit as the aperture through which light is diffracted. The wave-like nature of light forces an ultimate limit to the resolving power of all optical instruments. This is often determined by the quality of the lenses and mirrors in the instrument as well as the properties of the surrounding medium (usually air). The resolving power is the optical instrument’s ability to produce separate images of two adjacent points. This diffraction element leads to a phenomenon known as Cellini’s halo (also known as the Heiligenschein effect) where a bright ring of light surrounds the shadow of the observer’s head.ĭiffraction of light plays a paramount role in limiting the resolving power of any optical instrument (for example: cameras, binoculars, telescopes, microscopes, and the eye). This last interaction with the interface refracts the light back into the atmosphere, but it also diffracts a portion of the light as illustrated below. The beam, still traveling inside the water droplet, is once again refracted as it strikes the interface for a third time. As a light wave traveling through the atmosphere encounters a droplet of water, as illustrated below, it is first refracted at the water-to-air interface, then it is reflected as it again encounters the interface. The amount of diffraction depends on the wavelength of light, with longer wavelengths being diffracted at a greater angle than shorter ones (in effect, red light are diffracted at a higher angle than is blue and violet light). We can often observe pastel shades of blue, pink, purple, and green in clouds that are generated when light is diffracted from water droplets in the clouds. A good example of this is the diffraction of sunlight by clouds that we often refer to as a silver lining, illustrated in Figure 1 with a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This phenomenon can also occur when light is “bent” around particles that are on the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the light. The parallel lines are actually diffraction patterns. As the fingers approach each other and come very close together, you begin to see a series of dark lines parallel to the fingers. A very simple demonstration of diffraction of waves can be conducted by holding your hand in front of a light source and slowly closing two fingers while observing the light transmitted between them. |
